Registration under Act and its term:
- As per Sri Lanka Intellectual Property Act, No. 36 of 2003, a patents are granted to
inventions, and an “invention” means an idea of an inventor which permits the practice
of a solution to a specific problem in the field of technology. – Term of Patent: Valid for 20 years from the date of filing of the application.
Paris Convention/PCT Application:
- Sri Lanka is a part of the PCT as a Contracting State, therefore a National Phase
application may be filed accordingly. - For a Convention Application, the application may be filed within 12 months of the
filing of the Priority Application.

Documents Required for Filing:
- Name, Address & Nationality of the Applicant(s);
- Name, Address & Nationality of the Inventor(s);
- COMPLETE SPECIFICATION of the patent in English Language
- Proof of Right in favor of the Applicant.
- In case of claiming priority, Certified Copy of the Priority application (if not in English
language, please provide a Certified English version). - Power of Attorney
